Formal exercise prescription is most effective when the patient being referred is ready to make a determined change. Attempts at meaningful change without patient "buy-in" are usually unsuccessful. With this in mind, the following groups of people tend to be best suited for evaluation and development of a self-monitored exercise program:
- Otherwise healthy people (of all age groups) who are currently sedentary and who desire assistance to establish a baseline program, with general progression guidelines.
- Sedentary patients with chronic medical or orthopedic problems that might benefit from regular exercise.
- Patients with a combination of high blood pressure, borderline blood sugar control problems and mild to moderate problems with overweight. This combination of symptoms is often described as the "Metabolic Syndrome," and is particularly sensitive to the beneficial effects of exercise.
- Women who are planning for pregnancy or newly pregnant, to establish healthy individual guidlines going forward.
