Performance Testing Lab

Stadia Sports Medicine offers a full range of Physiologic Performance Testing for endurance athletes, including VO2 max testing, Anaerobic Threshold testing and blood lactate threshold testing.  We use the Jaeger Oxycon Mobile system for testing, which is comparable to the equipment used at the USOC Testing Center in Colorado Springs.  In addition, all testing at our facility is overseen by physician staff.  See below for more information on our services.

Why go through Performance Testing?

Simply put, performance testing helps you improve your performance.  It gives you insight into your overall potential relative to your current training state, and provides you with more accurate training zones (based on either heart rate or wattage) which, when used as the focal point of your training routine, will allow for greater performance gains than you would otherwise obtain.  Cyclists or runners who are serious about performance should consider testing as a means of optimally monitoring and fine-tuning their training.

Types of testing currently offered:

VO2 MAX and Anaerobic Threshold Testing -- $150 per test (Package deals available)

This test is done entirely with gas analysis by measuring the oxygen that you are using while exercising relative to the carbon dioxide that you are breathing off.  By analyzing this, your lactate response to exercise can be accurately estimated, and training zones developed around this point.  In addition, measurement of your peak ability to use oxygen (VO2 MAX) gives you an idea of where your "performance ceiling" is.  Finally, the gap between your anaerobic threshold and your VO2 MAX represents room for performance improvement, with this gap narrowing as your fitness level increases.  Test time for this test averages 20 minutes.

Lactate Threshold Testing -- $180 per test (Package deals available)

The lactate threshold is a direct measurement of blood lactate during exercise.  This test costs a bit more because of the cost of the lactate test strips that are used.  All blood testing is done with finger stick testing and is well-tolerated.  There is no more accurate way to measure the body's response to exercise than through blood lactate testing, considered the "gold standard" by most organizing bodies in endurance sports.  In addition, more accurate measurement of your training zones and monitoring of your training progress is possible using this approach.  Test time for this test averages about 35 minutes.

RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) -- $75 per test

RMR is a measurement of the bodies calorie burn in a resting state.  Measurement of this allows an athlete to more accurately estimate total calorie need for both optimal performance and weight loss/weight gain.  This test is also useful for individuals trying to diet for weight loss.  Total test time is about 15 minutes.  Testing should be done first thing in the morning.

Each athlete that is tested at Stadia will receive a printed report with the following data:

1.  Optimal heart rate and training zones

2.  Wattage at the lactate threshold for bikers

3.  Body composition testing
