Chad Carlson, MD, FACSM
Dr. Chad Carlson comes to Stadia Sports Medicine from Champaign, Illinois, where he worked for both Carle Clinic Association - a nearly 300 physician multispecialty group, and the University of Illinois, Champaign- Urbana, where he functioned as one of the team physicians for the Fighting Illini, taking care of athletes in a wide array of sports, from ice hockey to basketball. Dr. Carlson is a graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, completed a Family Medicine residency at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Central Indiana Orthopedics and Sports Medicine/Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He carries board certifications in both Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. Dr. Carlson has covered multiple NCAA National Championship events, as well as national championship events for U.S. Gymnastics and U.S. Swimming and Diving. Prior to coming to Champaign, he served as one of the team physicians at Ball State University, and has been involved in high school athletic event coverage for 14 years. He serves on committee for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and is a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine, where he has also served on committee. His clinical interests include identifying the biomechanical basis for patient injury, office-based fracture and joint injury care/arthritis care, and clinical exercise testing/exercise prescription. He is Associate Editor for Current Reviews in Musculoskeletal Medicine and has published clinical articles on various sports medicine subjects. He is currently involved in clinical research in the spheres of aerobic exercise performance and diagnosis of exercise-induced asthma. Dr. Carlson also sits on the Sports Medicine Committee for the Iowa Medical Association. He and his wife Amanda have three children, Ava, Ian and Eli. In his spare time, he enjoys active pursuits with family, reading, golfing, exercising and church-related activities at Westkirk Presbyterian Church in Urbandale.
